A&A EXCLUSIVE

From the Backyard to the Big Leagues…

Why it’s Time to Get Serious About Wiffle Ball

Alternative sports leagues have been taking over the world recently, and an old favorite is set to join the fray: Wiffle ball. We all know the classic spin on baseball, where people of all ages can take the plate without fear of taking a 100mph baseball to the ribs. But for the most part, that’s all the thought people have given it. Until now.

Philly native, Campus Apartments CEO, and 76ers part-owner David Adelman is helping change that. He’s part of a star-studded investment group backing a new professional Wiffle ball league featuring 10 teams and an ownership roster that includes names like actor Kevin Costner and entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk.

“I was introduced to that by another Philly guy, named Ron Biscardi,” Adelman tells me. “He said he met this 19- or 20-year-old kid who founded a Wiffle ball league, and I was like, I love Wiffle!”

Adelman now owns the Philly franchise and has become one of the league’s biggest champions. He’s all-in on what he calls “eclectic sports,” a category that includes everything from pickleball to the Savannah Bananas — sports that prioritize entertainment, accessibility, and culture as much as competition.

“In the day and age of streaming, everybody wants different stuff to watch,” he says. “We’re actually working on a streaming deal right now.”

🔥My Hot Take🔥

The most exciting sports in 2025 aren’t the ones you grew up watching.

We’ve covered alternative sports plenty of times in this newsletter — from breaking the news on Miles Chamley-Watson’s World Fencing League to Kevin McReynolds’ Overnght platform, where fans can stream everything from water polo to rowing. This latest addition only reinforces the growing demand for micro-focused, niche sports. And with someone like David Adelman — who already owns part of a major professional franchise in the Sixers — getting behind it, Big League Wiffle Ball has both experienced leadership and real room to scale.

Keep an eye on this league in the coming months. I wouldn’t be surprised if they make some noise.

ATHLETE INSIGHT

Your Brain Data Means Nothing Without This.

Our very own Casey Toohill on his Buffalo Bills signing day

Our bodies are still a mystery. We have the most sophisticated diagnostic tools in human history, yet when you start peeling back layers, it often feels like guesswork. As a pro athlete, I’d like to think I have a slightly better grasp of how the body functions, but there are plenty of moments where I still feel like I know nothing.

Right now, there’s a wave of companies focused on tracking and data. It’s an excellent place to start, and I’ve found many of these platforms genuinely useful. Industry leaders like Function Health, Oura, and Whoop continue to broaden their platforms, pull in more biomarkers, and offer recommendations or unique protocols. These companies may soon be able to help you see almost everything, but is seeing the same as changing?

A few weeks back, I wrote about sleep tech and argued that the winners won’t just measure sleep; they’ll help us sleep better. I feel the same way about the rise of neurotech. In our last issue, platform user and NBA forward Spencer Jones highlighted his interest in EEG-based technology. EEGs are fascinating and by far the most convenient way to study brain activity. Startups are taking different approaches, from Neurable’s EEG headphones to Kernel’s EEG cap.

Tracking brain performance is a no-brainer (no pun intended). It has real implications for health, performance, cognition, and even recovery from injury.

But here’s where I’ve struggled: what do you do with that information?

I’m interested in companies that don’t stop at diagnosis — companies that use the data to drive change. Specifically, EEG paired with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.

What is TMS?

TMS uses magnetic pulses placed near the scalp to stimulate targeted regions of the brain. It doesn’t require surgery or implants. The idea is simple: certain brain regions may be underactive or overactive, and gentle stimulation can help modulate their activity. Clinically, TMS has been used for depression, anxiety, and chronic pain. More recently, there’s research around cognitive performance, motor skill recovery, and neuroplasticity. It’s not a magic bullet, but it’s one of the first real tools that moves from measuring the brain to interacting with it.

I’ve personally used TMS. I found the research compelling and the experience fascinating. It’s not a magic bullet, but it feels like a step in the right direction toward combining data with research-driven treatment.

And that’s what people want — not just data. They want to operate at a higher level and feel better.

The challenge is the same two issues that hold most recovery or wellness modalities back — something I decided to call “The Two C’s”: costly and cumbersome. Not many people consistently want to buy something that is both expensive and inconvenient. TMS typically struggles with the Two C’s. It often requires a clinical setting, large machinery, and a high price tag.

So here’s the big question: who is going to crack the code on TMS?

Halo and AMPA are two companies I am watching in the TMS neurotech space. Halo has an extremely sleek device. It’s portable and appears to be usable at home, but I’m curious how effective it is compared to more traditional systems. AMPA takes the opposite approach, leaning on standard machines but making them easier to deploy and more consistent in application. There are multiple paths.

My takeaway is simple: neurotech shouldn’t stop at EEG. Measurement is useful but incomplete. The real excitement will come from startups that take what they measure and actually act on it.

COMPANY OF THE WEEK

White Leaf Provisions

As Casey continues to preach, what we put into our bodies is just as important as the work we put in. And while everyone is scrambling to clean up their diets, most grocery store shelves are still packed with products full of additives, fillers, and ingredients you wouldn’t feed to your worst enemy.

White Leaf Provisions is Aiming to Fix That.

The family-run brand is on a mission to bring truly regenerative, biodynamic, and organic food to the mainstream — starting with kids. Their product line spans baby food blends, apple sauces, bone broth smoothies, and pantry staples, all sourced from farms that prioritize soil health, transparency, and sustainability. No GMOs, no synthetic pesticides, no mystery ingredients. Just real food made the way it should be.

If you care about where your food comes from — or want to raise the next generation on something better than ultra-processed snacks — White Leaf Provisions is worth a look.
