Let’s skip the small talk,
For years I’ve admired Austin Rief, Co-Founder of Morning Brew from afar. We actually have modeled our newsletter after Morning Brew. So teaming up with Austin and the squad at Oceans is a pretty cool full-circle moment.
Now we have the ultimate partner to help founders and athletes hire work horses for their internal teams. Let’s go!!!

THE TOP
Dinner with 40+ Sports Executives
As new sports leagues emerge and valuations increase in existing ones, I had the privilege of attending a fantastic Capital & Court Dinner with 40+ sports executives to hear about what's going on at the very top.
It's clear that sports as an asset class is evolving in real time. New technology is affecting revenue multiples, private equity is entering the arena, and CEOs of tech companies are being recruited to lead new organizations because of their experience navigating investor-relations.
For Athletes & Assets™, it's imperative we closely monitor the state of the very top. It will have a trickle down effect on the athletes and athlete representation we work with. New salary caps and ever changing NIL rules will affect athlete appetite for equity vs. cash.
UNDERUTILIZED PARTNERS
NWSL and WNBA Athletes
So many tech companies and consumer brands out there are looking to connect with women, children, and families. I believe one of the most underutilized opportunities is for rising companies to partner with NWSL and WNBA athletes.
These women are role models, have loyal followers outside of their sport, and are both relatable and inspiring.
Founders are too quick to check the salary caps and IG follower count, not realizing the network, knowledge, and power they hold.
Another thing to note is there is a heavy concentration of athletes from Bay Area Schools like Santa Clara University, Stanford University, and University of California, Berkeley. A lot of your favorite female athletes are highly educated with degrees. They are intelligent, ambitious, and know enough about the startup game to give a brand a chance.
So if anyone has any doubts, please reach out. There should be none 🤷♂️
SKATEBOARD G
GP2 Kick-flips the Script
NBA free agent Gary Payton II is launching a professional skateboard league, joining a growing movement of athlete-led leagues aimed at providing year-round relevance to Olympic and action sports.
"Growing up, I always wanted to be a skateboarder. The skate park was right next to the basketball court," he said. "I'd skate there with my friends and they'd skate the park and I'd hoop." said Gary Payton II.
The league has signed 18 athletes to nonexclusive contracts, including 2020 Olympic silver medalist Kelvin Hoefler, SLS Select Series champion Manny Santiago, X Games skateboard street gold medalists Ryan Decenzo and Pamela Rosa and silver medalist Samarria Brevard.
More info on the league to be found in article attached.
I am skeptical, not sure how this will work out long term. But you know what, if the league can master getting people to fall in love with the skater before trying out the sport, like how Overtime Elite does with their players, you never know.
I think they just need to be outrageously ridiculous on Tik-Tok to get the next generation seriously interested in this.
